Hard to find quality object, this is a finely modelled saltglazed stoneware German small beer stein in the form of a Monk, the head is hinged and pewter mounted with a thumbpiece and fully signed to base and also inside the lid for Reinhold Hanke for c1880-90. These personifications are less common and very decorative. This design is #67 in the Hanke catalogue 15 x 10 x 13 cm
